For Publication: Correcting Errors in DissertationsCorrection of Errors

The Doctoral Committee of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science and the Faculty Council have decided on the following procedure for correcting content-related, formal or editorial errors in dissertations intended for publication.

Procedure

  • Reviewers are informed of this process in the last paragraph of the letter of inquiry which is sent out by the doctoral office: “If you wish to point out any errors in content or form of the dissertation, please list these on a separate sheet or in an appendix to your review.”
  • Reviewers or doctoral supervisors (during circulation of the dissertation in the faculty) identify formal and/or content-related errors.
  • Information on errors which are reported to the doctoral office is collectively forwarded to the chairman of the examination committee (usually the first supervisor).
  • The chair of the examination committee informs the doctoral candidate during the defense (the list of errors is kept on file) that changes to the thesis are desired.
  • Only in this case there is the possibility to correct errors; the doctoral candidate's wish alone is not sufficient. During the defense the request must be established by the examination committee as a condition for the publication. The doctoral candidate enters the examination with the version of the thesis that he or she submitted for the defense. Corrections to the thesis are only possible after the defense. The examination committee sets a deadline for correcting errors.
  • The doctoral candidate revises the dissertation (and may also correct any errors he/she discover him-/herself.). The corrections are marked in color in the PDF version. The chair of the examination committee checks these and gives his approval to the doctoral candidate and to the doctoral office, too.
  • The doctoral candidate sends the final version (corrected reading version) as a PDF and two identical printed copies to the doctoral office. These are finally approved by the chairman of the examination committee and the printed copies are stamped by the doctoral office.
  • The uncorrected copy of the dissertation will be sent to the entire faculty as a documentation of the examination.
  • The doctoral candidate submits one of the corrected copies to the university library and receives the proof of publication. The second corrected copy is sent to the faculty's specialized library.

The “LaTeX-changes package” is recommended for the correction.
